Lifestyle Martial Arts (LMA) is, first and foremost, my philosophy on a better way to train (study and teach) martial arts. I have always been complimented for being a good student and a quick learner. When I started to examine what earned me these compliments, I found that my attitude does not strictly line-up with attitudes in mainstream martial art schools.
I believe the purpose of martial arts training is to master skills that deal with conflict. LMA is not a style or art as it does not define specific skills or level of conflict. Rather LMA reflects my efforts to develop the most efficient way of mastering those skills. I have taken the opportunity of having my own school to develop this philosophy as well as teaching this philosophy by using this philosophy. I teach techniques, tactics and applications from a myriad of styles and arts I have learned from various experts; these make my personal art, Gishi Ryu Karate. The way in which my classes' participants (and I) work on each skill is unique to LMA. With the feedback from my students, my peers, my patrons and my Masters, I have crafted the tools and methods of training in line with the LMA philosophy.
The various elements of the LMA philosophy are not new or unique to me. Those who have come to know it agree with at least some of the individual elements. This is not surprising as on reflection they find these elements in their own way of training. Unfortunately, most don't have the opportunity or knowledge of how to train in a manner that uses all of the elements.
LMA in not an organization or association. It is not tied to any art, style or system. I consider myself as part of a network of friends who are martial artists that train together and share ideas. I openly promote the LMA way as I am certain it has benefits for all who use it and that it is compatible with their art, style and system. I do run seminars at the invite of other schools and events. Participants are free to adopt this philosophy/methodology/way as they see fit.
